Three total solar eclipses fall in the same season across three successive years — a rare alignment that won't repeat until the 2040s. Witness all three and you join a story few ever will.

The Iceland Eclipse

August 12, 2026 · Max totality 0m 0s · Two minutes of darkness over the land of fire and ice

On August 12, 2026, the Moon's umbra arcs over the Arctic — sunrise on Russia's Taymyr Peninsula, a loop near the North Pole, then across eastern Greenland's ice cap before clipping western Iceland and racing across the North Atlantic to make a low, sunset landfall over northern Spain. Maximum totality is 2 minutes 18 seconds, over the ocean about 45 km west of Iceland's Látrabjarg cliffs.

This is the first total solar eclipse visible from Iceland since 1954 — the only one of the entire 21st century, with the next not until 2196 — and the first over Reykjavík since 1433. For mainland Europe it is the first totality since 1999; for Spain, the first meaningful mainland totality since August 30, 1905, whose path was nearly identical to 2026's. It opens an unprecedented Spanish trilogy of three central eclipses in under 18 months: total in 2026, total again in August 2027, and an annular 'ring of fire' in January 2028 — prompting Spain to create a thirteen-ministry committee (CITE) to coordinate the run.

The Desert Eclipse

August 2, 2027 · Max totality 0m 0s · The longest totality in decades, over ancient lands

On August 2, 2027, the Moon's shadow crosses the Strait of Gibraltar, sweeps over North Africa and the Nile Valley at Luxor, then races across the Red Sea past Jeddah and Mecca and out to the Indian Ocean — 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality at maximum, in Egypt's New Valley Governorate about 60 km southeast of Luxor, with the Sun standing 82° above the horizon at 1:02 p.m. local time.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center confirms this as the longest total solar eclipse on easily accessible land between 1991 and 2114 — a 123-year span. The last comparably long land-based totality was in 1991 (Mexico, almost seven minutes); the next is not until 2114. About half the path is over land, and 88.9 million people live within it across twelve nations — at least double the 44 million inside the April 2024 North American path. It belongs to Saros series 136, the same family that produced the 1919 relativity-proving eclipse.

The Oceania Eclipse

July 22, 2028 · Max totality 0m 0s · Totality sweeps across the sunburnt country

On July 22, 2028, the Moon's umbra crosses the Indian Ocean and Christmas Island, makes landfall on the Kimberley coast just before midday, sweeps southeast across the outback and directly over the entire Greater Sydney area, then crosses the Tasman Sea to Queenstown and Dunedin in New Zealand. Maximum totality is 5 minutes 10 seconds in the Kimberley; over Sydney it is 3 minutes 49 seconds, with the Sun 29° above the horizon at about 2:01 p.m. AEST.

This is Sydney's first total solar eclipse since March 26, 1857 — 171 years — and its last until June 3, 2858. A total eclipse over a major Australian city is extraordinarily rare: any single point on Earth averages one total eclipse only every 375 years, which is precisely why Sydney has waited so long. It is the second of five Australian total eclipses spanning 2023–2038, and its path crosses three future eclipse tracks (2030, 2037, 2038).
